Bears in January

Posted on 1/28/2009 7:53:47 PM

This morning it was 21 below and we went out helping the bear biologists dig into some dens (or we hoped we were helping). These guys and gals work hard at the 50+ study bears denned in our area. The bears all have radio collars and some GPS units and all have ear tags. Nearly 100% survival rate from last year. The cub Matt is holding is about a week old and weighs in at about a pound. The mother was about 100 lbs and 4 years old. We dug up a total of 5 bears in 3 dens. Hard work for an old man..........What a lot of fun. The bear population continues to grow and the size continues to increase. Yearlings are a full 20% larger than they were 30 years ago in the same study area.

One shot and down he went. A 300 yard drag brought this monster to the truck. The buck dressed out at 230 pounds, our largest so far. All hunters saw deer today (a great day to be in the woods).
